Study English Vocabulary With Software Programs

Do you want to learn English fast? Aside from taking an online course program or attending a language class, you can use an English vocabulary building software program. These programs are designed to contain words and phrases from dictionaries and will give the user the fundamentals needed to learn English. Here is a quick guide on how to learn English faster while using a vocabulary building software program:

1. Get a program with an extensive library of words. This is important as you would have to increase your vocabulary and improve your pronunciation. Ideally, the program should have an extremely large list of words from the Oxford English Dictionary. This dictionary is well-know internationally and is the one that is most commonly used by English schools as reference material.

2. Complete the sentence building exercises. When you use these kind of exercises, you will learn how to build a sentence with the use of the words and phrases on the list. This is an excellent way to improve your vocabulary skills and you will be filling up the blanks in the sentence with the new words you have just learned.

3. Practice your lessons. You can recite the words out loud, write them down and use them in sentences. When you are not using the English vocabulary building software program for activities, tutorials or flashcards, try to make the time to practice the lessons you have learned. The more you use the words and phrases that were taught to you, the better you will be at communicating in English.

4. Create custom word lists. You have the option to create a word list for your study for print out. English vocabulary building software programs are created with an enormous data base of words from dictionaries and thesauruses. When you make a word list, choose the words that you would like to review and practice. This method is another effective way for you to increase your English skills in as short a time as possible.

5. Learn root words. If you know the root word, you will be able to easily expand your vocabulary because you will understand the basic meaning of words that contain it. It will also help you in pronouncing a lot of long words as you will be familiar with the root word. Learning about root words is one of the best ways to get to know the English language faster.

6. Create flashcards. There are programs designed with interactive flashcards. To use these flashcards, all that needs to be done is to point at the word or phrase and click it, and the definition of the item will be revealed. You can use the software program to make your own flashcards by printing out a word or phrase on a small sheet of paper and writing down the definition at the back of the paper. These you can use as a memorization aid. It is also a good way to make reference materials for your review.

Use this tips to help you learn English faster. English vocabulary software programs have helped a lot of people improve English, yet you should know that learning English as a second language is not dependent on vocabulary alone. To learn English as a second language, you have to improve your grammar skills, among other things.

PC Study Bible Software – What Are the Advantages?

There are a growing number of PC study Bibles being developed and published for Christian clergy and laypersons.  They range from some whose basic platform is free for the download to more sophisticated packages that cost hundreds of dollars.  It should be immediately obvious that the computer’s ability to search and retrieve gives a distinct edge to Bible software in contrast to hard-copy study Bibles and libraries.  However, often someone who is pondering whether to invest in a software product needs, first, to justify to himself the value of his intended purchase, and, second, to decide how much of an investment to make.  That is the purpose of this article.  What are the advantages of study Bible software in contrast to hard copy texts and resources?  And what premium features might be considered?

It should be noted that although I am using the term “PC” generically to refer to any computer, most study Bible software is, in fact, developed for use on the Windows PC platforms.  Only one publisher, Accordance, produces software that is designed specifically for the Macintosh.  Some of the other publishers have adapted their Windows software for use on the Mac.

As already alluded to, the primary advantage of PC study Bibles is their search and retrieval features.  All such software provides both text search (book, chapter, verse) and keyword search.  Most provide standard advanced search capabilities, such as “any word,” “all words,” and “exact match.”

The differences appear in the search results.  Here are some capabilities to look for.

  • Ability to search for and display more than one non-sequential text or passage at a time.
  • Ability to expand the result to context (surrounding verses) and full chapter.
  • Copy-and-paste and embedding capabilities.
  • Links to notes, definitions, commentary, related topics, and concordance listings.
  • Links to Strong’s Concordance or Dictionary.
  • Multiple translations: Note whether proprietary versions are included in addition to public domain versions.
  • Capability of displaying more than one translation at a time, e.g., parallel texts (when multiple translations are included).
  • Audio versions of the text.
  • Audio pronunciation of names and places.
  • Hebrew and Greek text.
  • Hebrew and Greek interlinear with English text.
  • Present-day foreign languages.

Note that most, if not all, of the features listed above are available on-line without cost.  The real question, then, is whether the student would like to have the convenience of some or all of these features included in a single package.

Premium features available in some of the more advanced offerings are as follows:

  • Proprietary commentaries and reference books.
  • Commentaries in original foreign languages.
  • Extended resources for Hebrew and Greek exegesis.
  • A variety of Hebrew, Greek, and foreign language fonts.
  • Other original-language sources and resources.
  • Word-study reference works.
  • Integration of maps.
  • Integration of multimedia resources.
  • Sermon resources and illustrations.
  • Teachers’ and leaders’ resources.
  • Small group resources.
  • Ability to create custom databases and lexicons.
  • Custom diagrams and mind maps.
  • Drag-and-drop to other applications.
  • Note and composition management.
  • Statistics utility.
  • Module upgrades.
  • Addition and integration of external materials.

These features are not generally available on-line, and in the case of some of the proprietary material they are only available in hard-copy form outside of the software packages that offer them.  Of course, these are the features that raise the cost of these more expensive software.  In fact, the most extensive packages can cost well over $1,000.  However, if one were to invest in the original hard copy materials, the cost would be in the tens of thousands!  There is no question that the software is cost-effective.  The user must decide for himself which extended features he would like and how useful they might be for his purposes.

Organizing Your Books Using Catalog Software

If you’re a voracious reader, you’ve probably got quite a collection of books. As you buy even more, you might need to organize your collection so as to make it easier for you to locate them. This can be a tedious task when you don’t follow a system but with a book catalogue software, everything’s a breeze. This is especially helpful when you keep your books everywhere from your home to your office. Whether you’ve got novels or inspirational books or manuals from business gurus, you’re going to find a catalog program extremely handy as this will help you keep track of what you own and what you may consider to buy in the future.

Having this program can also be helpful if your job requires you to do a lot of research. With this software, you can keep a list of everything you know you would be needing as references from time to time. No need to go looking for something you already have in your computer or your bookshelf. You can just take a look at your list, which can come with menus and submenus, and you already know instantly what information is available and what you need to seek out. This can be a terrific time saver, especially when you need a lot of reference guides for your study.

Libraries will also find great use of catalog software with their large volume of books and other publications to maintain. When there are too many titles, authors and manufacturers to keep track of, it’s easy to lose oneself in the maze. But with this program, library staff will have a clearly defined and fully functional system that allows them to sort through everything whether by title, author or any other category. Especially functional is this software for inventories that the librarian may wish to do every end of a semester or school year. Of course, students are at a great advantage when they can easily browse through books on a computer monitor instead of using the traditional card method.

If you have a relative or friend who’s a bookworm or works with a lot of books, this software can be a perfect present. When giving gifts, it’s good to consider what the receiver needs and will likely find useful. While giving something for pleasure is sweet, giving something practical will go a longer way. Besides, something the person can use for a worthwhile purpose will probably be most appreciated.
